Beginning January 1, 2007 New York Relay Captioned Telephone Service will be available in the State of NY for people who are hard-of-hearing, have experienced hearing loss later in life, or are deaf individuals who prefer to use their own voice. Captioned Telephone Service is ideal for spoken words over the telephone. A special telephone called "CapTel ™" is required in order to access the Captioned Telephone Service. This amplified telephone works like any other telephone with one important addition-it displays every word the caller says throughout the conversation. Calls are made in a natural manner---simply dial the telephone number directly of the person you are calling. Captions appear nearly simultaneously with spoken words.
